Gateway Shelter for Women and Men

The John Howard Society began offering services to men and women in Okanagan in 1957. Originally based out of Kelowna the Society grew over the years, eventually providing services throughout the Okanagan, the Thompson region and the Kootneys. The shelter provides women emergency shelter in the downtown core area of Vernon for the absolute homeless who may be suffering from economic downturn illiteracy, addictions and/or mental health challenges.

I have lived in Vernon since 2007. I have been homeless on and off since I was 12 years old. I am 49 years old now. I find it hard to ask for help, but at the same time I have never needed so much help. I am wanting to make a difference.

I am 38 years old. I recently moved to Vernon and have been homeless for a month. I have 7 years clean and I just graduated from the Academy of Learning. My two girls live out here in Vernon and we have been a part for 10 years. So I left my home in Surrey to come be with my girls. Once I find a place I will try to obtain a job as a, Administrative Assistant.

I am 49 years old. I am a women who left bountiful and have come to be staying at gateway. I have been in Vernon for a year and without a home for a year. I am learning how to conduct myself. Bountiful is a place where you merry young and men have many wives. I was born there.

I am 34 years old and have been without a home for 5 years. When I was 29 I developed a drug addiction after loosing all 4 of my children. I have been homeless and alone since I moved here 12 months ago. I have kicked a $400/day heroin habit, one day I will be complete again. I would like to be a CSW.

I am 52 years old. I have gone to college, have a certificate in Marketing and Management. I ahve had an abortion and spent a few years in and out of institutions after that. I had my skull operated on. For thirty years I have been on and off trying to improve my lifestyle. Being at Gateway has been a safe place for me. One day, when I’m feeling better, I would like to meet a man.

I am 50 years old. May it be known that for years I have struggled with grief issues especially at this time of year. I have a tendency to isolate especially at this time of year, because losing so many of my family members and close friends. I have passed on many invitations and Christmas functions to the point of not celebrating Christmas at all. Due to some unfortunate situations in my past I have said no thank you to all Christmas’s for the past five years.

I am 45 years old. I’m a college educated female who has made some bad choices in life. I got involved in the drug world which led me to make very bad decisions and I ended up in jail many times. That has effected me in getting employment and housig. But, through the Grace of God I’m still alive and have faith I can succeed and have a successful life again.
