He says his need is that because his first pay won’t be till after Christmas he needs return bus tickets to Kelowna, BC to visit his 3 kids who live there. They want him to be with him for Christmas.

Her greatest challenge is trying to get money for a damage deposit and food. She has saved enough money for rent. What encourages her most is the staff who helps her get on the right track and stay off drugs. She also loves to read crime stories.

He is working and has been since he was released from jail in September 2006 after spending 19 months there. He is also trying to save enough money to get his own apartment. What helps him feel most encouraged is his family who has stuck by him through the last 4 years.

His biggest challenge is coming up with enough money for what he needs for an apartment including hook ups, furniture and first and last months rent. Mike is a 45 year old man who came from a small village called Clury, population 300 people. He divorced 5 months ago and lost all that he had at one time, including his children. He’s been sober 2 months. He has no brothers or sisters, parents, no family at all and doesn’t know what a friend is anymore - they all lie, cheat and break his heart. He came from east of Calgary, a 40 minute drive so he feels like a true Calgary cowbow. He finished school here in cowtown. Last night he stayed at the Centre of Hope which he thinks is a nice place to call home when you’re in need like himself. His biggest challenge is keeping warm but most of all keeping safe. He says he feels lost, lonely and afraid in different areas. Being alone is not pleasant. Waking up wondering what’s for today but most of all he loves his people who have sobriety in AA and Jesus. He also loves church and native spirituality and just looking at Elders who lived a lifetime and children who are gifted with talent.

Steven arrived from Ottawa, Ont. On Monday, the 11th of December at about 6 am. He came to Calgary to find gainful employment. So far things are going very well! I was working for ProTemps by Wednesday the thirteenth unloading trucks and cargo. He is also working part time for the Herald at night. However the above will no longer be true since he was hired full time by a demolition firm starting Dec. 20. He is staying at the Centre of Hope until he earns enough to pay for his own place. His biggest challenge is to serve the Lord Jesus and not his flesh. The Lord is faithful. He will finish what he started. This is his hope and encouragement.

Grant is a 20 year old man who was having problems with his Dad in BC. He got into a fight and got kicked out so he came out here on his own. He began working various jobs over the last year and was hanging out with the wrong people after which time he lost his place and began having legal problems. He is working towards improving his living situation and developing a positive outlook. He wants to get his own apartment and start a career in the oilfield. One of his challenges right now is not having proper work gear, that is, steel toed boots. He needs family support and would like to talk to his parents to develop; a more positive relationship but cannot afford a phone card. He is hoping for a better Christmas than last year.

My biggest challenge is being able to stay healthy, therefore I’m unable to secure a fulltime job and residence. What helps me to feel most encouraged is being able to bring smiles to people’s faces when I remember their names or needs such as a scarf, a coffee, or a granola bar, or just a chat or ear to listen. Born in Alberta, on the Siksika Nation Reserve, Eithan age 28 has now been in Calgary for six years. He is staying at the Center of Hope, but is trying to find a permanent place to stay. One of his biggest challenges is staying away from drugs and alcohol, which are made available right outside of the Salvation Army. He finds this the hardest when he gets bored. Working helps him to stay encouraged.

Age 50 and originally from Saskatchewan, Andre has been traveling around since the age of fourteen. He first came to Calgary and then moved to Victoria for two years before joining the army. Two years ago he returned to Calgary for work and soon after started addiction treatment. His biggest challenge is getting over drugs but he has been clean for fourteen months. What is most encouraging to him is watching people help the homeless.

He is a 31 year old man Orthodox Christian from Eritrea, North Africa. Gezehegne came to Canada from Eritrea to work as a carpenter and arrived in Brooks, Alberta one year ago. The day after his arrival he was in a car accident and suffered internal injuries as well as hand and leg injuries. He speaks and writes very little English. He was then transported to Calgary for medical treatment and has been staying in the shelter since his release from hospital.

Jim is 46 years old. He originally from Manitoba in 1980 but returned to Manitoba this year for about six months. He moved back to Calgary to be near his kids, who he has not spent Christmas with for a few years and would love to spend Christmas day with them this holiday. He has four children, one son in Manitoba and a son and twin daughters in Calgary. His biggest challenge is getting off the streets. It is a very humbling experience for him as this is the first time he has had to do so, since coming back in July, and he thinks of his brother who used to live on the street and now knows what he went through. Jim works with hazardous materials and has always had a job. He very much looks forward to having a home where his kids can come and visit him. Jim loves music, except for country, and used to play the guitar before he lost the use of his right hand. Since then he has learned to sing and would like to see the opera.

Steve is a 44 year old man from Ontario. He traveled to Calgary in August to find work and is currently is employed by a commercial glass company. Last night he stayed at the shelter. The biggest challenge that he faces is finding a permanent residence, even with a full time job it’s hard to pool enough money together to get a place. The thing that keeps Steve going is the fact that he now has found a good job and feels like he is on his way to a better future.

She is most encouraged by healthy, positive, humorous, happy people.

His biggest challenges are acquiring full-time employment, finding an apartment and a partner. He is most encouraged by knowing he is clean, healthy and warm, which allows David to do the best he can.
