Steven is a 24 year old man from Curve Lake Ontario. He says, "I have been in Calgary since the beginning of October. I moved to Calgary because I lost my licence and lost my job along with it. I chose Calgary to come in search of my industry certifications. I have completed a three week course through the CDIRC and received my industry certifications. I am currently searching for work in the oil & gas industry and trying to save to get my own place, and all clothing needed to do seismic work such as a Helly Hansen Parka with ski pants with a water resistant bottom, and a pair of Baffin insulated rubber boots. I'm also trying to pay for fines from losing my licence. If I fail to pay my fees in full by December 21st then I will end up in jail for breaching my probation. This is not a place I want to be. Since being in Calgary, I have been staying in the Drop In center on the 5th floor and going to school and working temp jobs when possible. Hopefully in the near future I will find job security and be able to get on with my life. Thank you."

After 10 years of physical abuse Olivia ended up on the Calgary streets with no place to live. Last night Olivia stayed at the Mustard Seed but has been in and out of many Calgary shelters depending on the city’s unpredictable weather. With all space taken at times it can end up being a very cold night. Olivia feels encouraged by her boyfriend who also wants to get off the street and help her too. She hopes that soon she can get a place to call “home”.

He says, "I have been in Alberta almost 10 months now and was forced to leave B.C. because of lack of work. I first worked in Brooks at a meat packing plant until I injured my back and am slowly trying to get back on my feet. My biggest challenge is trying to get my life back together in a big city which I am not familiar with. There are a lot of people less fortunate, either by medical reasons or just being victims of circumstance. Calgary has a lot to offer. There are a few residents here that offer advice and encouragement."

Kari is a 38 year old female who was born and raised in Calgary. Kari says, "I am a mother of three. My husband died of cancer four years ago, and since then I have been having the hardest time of my life. The reason I'm down here at the Drop-In is because of my on-going battle with drugs. I don't know any other way to cope with my problems, needless to say the drugs just bring me more problems. I stay night after night at the Drop-In or outside. I have no family that will talk to me anymore. My biggest challenge is keeping warm and safe, making sure I have food, and medication. I really wish my kids and family would talk to me again. What makes me feel the most encouraged is the Calgary Drop-In and all the great staff."

Unfortunately we made a bad decision regarding housing that cost us all of our resources, and ended up at the Drop-In. Being addicts, we found it almost impossible ot stay clean. I went to treatment in March 2006 and have been sober since then. However, she (my wife) decided not to clean up and I have unfortunately had to terminate a beautiful eight-year marriage. I have just gotten a new job after having a horrendous experience with a job in Edmonton. I look forward to becoming a true productive member of the community. The biggest challenge I have is affordable housing and stable employment. What helps me feel encouraged is the volunteering I do for the Drop-In and working six days a week."

She says, "I left my job a few years ago to pursue prophetic writing. My biggest challenge is no income whatsoever. This keeps me feeling trapped on site and limited. I can't buy gifts. But I now have a job. On the bright side, there are many resources here and with the senior activity center. The staff are very supportive and I have met some wonderful friends who are there for me. I will always remember how blessed I was by the gifts I received last Christmas. My family has not been supportive of my work for God. The gift of extended love has been the most precious to me." Heather slept at the Drop-In Center last night.

I hope that a job and a nice little room to rent will be in my near future."

It's been a struggle, but I believe in my Creator and myself. I try to stay close to the Drop-In, to keep an eye out on other family members. I also believe members of the Drop-In watch out for me. My biggest challenge is willingness. My five (previous) years clean and sober encourage me, as well as my common-law and 3 daughters. I believe in God's time and only then I will be back in recovery."

Last night I got to sleep in my bed on the 4th floor at the Drop-In. I am a night-shift worker at the Saddledome and normally I will have day-sleep at the Drop-In. My 2 biggest challenges are: recovery from the loss of my soul-mate. It has only been 4 months and I still miss her dearly. My second challenge is getting a place to call home. It is unrealistically hard to do on the money I make. What encourages me most? the arena. The Calgary Flames/Hitmen have made the adjustment a little easier, but I am completely alone in this world. To say hockey did keep me alive would be the truth."

Jim is a 53 year old male who came to Calgary 6 years ago to be with his mother until she passed away 2 years ago. He has been staying at the Drop In center since he lost his full time job. According to Jim, "I feel that my security has been the biggest challenge... it is difficult confronting some of the people I encounter on the street in this area. I am most encouraged by the way I have been treated by the staff here at the Drop In. They have been very understanding and helpful to me as I have had to deal with people and situations I have never had to before. Thank you for your help."
For Christmas, Jim would like bus tickets and an electric razor, as his was stolen a couple weeks ago.

Paula was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and raised on air force bases, mostly in Ontario. She came to Calgary 6 years ago to try and get a better life. Her biggest challenge is getting a job because when people find out that she lives at a shelter, they won't hire her. Last night she stayed at the Drop In Center.

Bradley is a 46 year old who came from Edmonton in 2001. When he suffered a shoulder injury, doctors told him he could get an MRI in Calgary faster, but he still had to wait over 3 years to see a surgeon and get the MRI. He has had to stay at a shelter for most of the time since he's been here. But after 16 months of rehab, he now says "things are turning for the better. I have just replaced my tools, and theres work for me in the new year. I am going to get by. A little casual labour before Christmas - everything will be fine. It sure is encouraging to know that people do care. Next year I hope that I may be a giver of hope and happiness."
For Christmas, Bradley would like socks, levi's size 36/30, and underwear.

Irise is a 57 year old woman from a small town in Manitoba. She came to Calgary a few years ago to try and have a better quality of life. Her biggest challenges are keeping warm and safe, and getting enough food, but she tries to keep healthy and feels encouraged when she feels good enough to be able to work.

Jason is a 35 year old male who came from Edmonton 2 months ago to try and better himself. He says, "I am dealing with my addiction issues and also with the horrible side effects of the treatments. I have 2 wonderful children back in Edmonton that I can't wait to see again when I am all better physically and mentally. My biggest challenge has been food and affordable housing (a room or cheap bachelor suite). My kids are my biggest boost to keep going... I need them in my life as much as they need me."

Robert is a 49 year old native Calgarian. Robert says, "What brought me to the situation I'm in right now was crack cocaine. I was married 27 years. Have overcome the addiction but find myself looking for someone as special as my ex-wife. The depression is the hardest thing I've had to overcome, especially at Christmas as without a place it is doubtful I'll get to see my 2 baby girls, truly the love of my life. I've always worked, and Im starting a new job, but with the rent the price it is, its tough to save the money here. If there was one thing I would want would be a 2 bedroom appartment so my girls could come visit or maybe a phone so when they call, they don't have to hear 'Calgary Drop In Center'. What ever happens, I'll pay it forward."

Kevin was born in Digby, Nova Scotia. He completed highschool and got a masonry trade in a vocational school before moving to Calgary 5 years ago, and has taken additional training for new trades and skills whenever he had the opportunity. His biggest challenge is that his wages are not high enough to afford the rents in Calgary. He is encouraged by being in Canada and the opportunities that are available here, and feels fortunate for the shelter system and how they do their best to provide for people's needs.

I'm currently residing on the 4th floor at the Drop In Center and in need of a couple of things this season. I'm working full time at a local warehouse.
For Christmas Nick would like: socks, bus tickets, shoes (preferably something I can work and stand in for long periods of time @ work - the ones I'm using now are thinnish and are skatery type shoes - size 10 1/2 - 11), boxer shorts and a phone card if you can arrange it.
